Color supports the recruitment and testing of large populations through health systems, enterprises, and other channels. This creates the opportunity to recruit more diverse and under-studied populations than through traditional recruitment efforts.
Color enables remote submission operations through saliva-based collection kits. Sample collection kits can be mailed to participants’ homes, stocked in clinics, or distributed at large events. Providing a sample takes only a few minutes. Samples are then mailed back to Color’s sequencing lab. Recruitment at population scale, simplified.
Color runs one of the highest quality, most scalable, and efficient sequencing labs in the world. Color’s world-class engineering, genetics, and robotics teams have built custom chemistry, hardware and software to enable population-level genetics in a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited lab. Color's entire process, from cutting-edge robotics, laboratory management software, chemistry protocols and incorporation of Illumina's highest capacity sequencers (NovaSeq), has been custom-designed for quality, speed and scale.
Color’s bioinformatics pipeline achieves best-in-class variant calling (for SNVs, indels, and structural variants) and imputation, through extensive use of machine learning and data-driven approaches. Color’s custom software tools and automation workflows allow for scale as well as lab optimizations, while decreasing operational overhead, runtime, and other costs.
Color combines distributed systems engineering with computational biology to run one of the fastest whole-genome bioinformatics pipelines in the industry, allowing it to process up to hundreds of thousands of samples in days, on concurrent nodes.
Not only is Color running a state-of-the-art bioinformatics pipeline, but also advancing the field. Recent publications, posters, and blog posts:
Color’s phenotypic data platform enables the collection of rich, comprehensive phenotypic data on an ongoing basis. Surveys and quizzes are highly engaging and provide immediate value by telling people how they compare to others—resulting in higher completion rates. In addition, Color’s family history tool allows individuals to invite family members to fill in family health history details. This creates a more complete phenotypic picture to help accelerate discovery.

Built by systems engineers and data scientists from the world’s largest technology companies, including Google, Twitter, and Microsoft, Color’s Data Platform leverages state-of-the-art cloud and distributed systems technologies to rapidly ingest and analyze vast amounts of data. Any researcher in your organization can log into the intuitive interface, run a query, get results and visualizations within seconds, and generate novel insights from a massive, genomic and phenotypic dataset.
We take privacy and security very seriously and believe every individual who uses Color owns their data and should have the ability to decide if, and how, their data is used. Color complies with the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements regarding data privacy and protection. Security is a primary consideration in everything we do, and we have strict technical safeguards in place to protect individuals’ information.
We are proud to support scientific research to advance human health, improve outcomes, and save lives. All of our research collaborations are done in the context of an IRB and require informed consent from participants.
Through our collaborations with top research institutions, we have seen firsthand that major advancements in human health are made possible by individuals who generously consent to sharing their anonymized data. We are grateful to these individuals and take the responsibility to advance human health seriously.
