Have more questions?

Here are a few common questions about Color. If you have more questions, get in touch with us.

  • Does this report tell me if I will get cancer?
No. The Color test is not designed to test for the presence of cancer, and it will not tell you if you do or do not have cancer.

The Color test analyzes 30 genes that have been linked with increased risk of hereditary cancer. Testing positive for a mutation in one of these genes does not mean that you have cancer or that you will definitely develop cancer in your lifetime.
  • How soon do I get my results?
We are focused on providing you the highest quality results possible, and that means giving individual attention to every sample. Our average turnaround time is currently 3-4 weeks from the time we receive your activated kit at the lab, but the actual time will be subject to the data associated with each unique sample.
  • What do negative and positive results mean?
Most people receive a negative result. This means no mutations associated with an increased risk for breast, colorectal, melanoma, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, or uterine cancer were identified in any of the 30 genes analyzed.

A small percentage of people receive a positive result. This means a mutation that increases your risk for cancer was identified. This result does not mean that you have cancer or that you will definitely develop cancer in your lifetime. But it is important that you discuss your results with your healthcare provider to design a personalized screening and prevention plan.
  • Should I be scared if my results come back positive?
A positive result does not mean that you have cancer or that you will definitely develop cancer in your lifetime. But it is important that you discuss your results with your healthcare provider to design a personalized screening and prevention plan.
  • How is my healthcare provider involved?
Your physician will receive a copy of your results automatically if she or he ordered testing for you, or we can send a copy at your request. It is important to make an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your results and any next steps that you should consider. For example, you and your healthcare provider may discuss a personalized cancer screening and prevention plan based on your results.
  • What does it mean to my family if I test positive for a mutation?
If your family members would benefit from genetic testing and are at least 18, they can purchase Color through the website. Please keep in mind that not everyone wants to know their genetic status and testing is a very personal decision.

For parents, siblings, and adult children of people with mutations, Color and the BRCA Foundation are offering genetic testing for just $50, rather than the normal $249 price. Learn more about our Family Testing Program.
  • How does genetics impact cancer?
Cancer is complex and has many causes. Most cancers are sporadic and not due to one identifiable cause. But about 10-15% of certain cancers are due to harmful genetic changes, called mutations, that are passed down through families.(citations) Color’s genetic risk analysis is designed for women and men to detect mutations in a comprehensive set of genes associated with common hereditary cancers: breast, colorectal, melanoma, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, and uterine cancers.
  • How is my privacy protected?
Your results are available to you and the healthcare provider who ordered your test as well as any additional healthcare providers you designated. Your results will not be sent by Color to your insurance company, employer, or any other healthcare provider without your explicit request.
